On foot, by bicycle and river boat
Discover Luang Prabang’s enduring charm by bicycle, on foot, by riverboat or simply contemplating the town’s spiritual legacy from your room’s lovely veranda.
What do dreamy, romantic days in Luang Prabang look like? Begin by biking to the daily morning market, where farmers sell fresh herbs, spices and vegetables — and live insects and forest grubs! At dusk, a local handicraft market sets up along the town’s main street, selling gorgeous handmade wares. Climb the handsome, naga-lined steps to the top of Mount Phousi and get a bird’s eye view of Luang Prabang’s glittering temple spires. Hop on a long-tail boat and cruise up the Mekong, stopping at small artisan villages that have been handcrafting pottery, and local ‘Lao Lao’ whiskey for generations. The Nam Khan’s sandy banks are ideal for beachcombing or paddling down in a kayak. Or, take a day trip to the nearby Kuang Si Waterfall, a stunning natural phenomenon with cascading terraces and aquamarine pools.
